WebReady - Podcasting, RSS Feeds, Automated FTP & Single Click Web Publishing

Protocol

WebReady uses UNC or FTP to modify - create and delete files on your web server. This is the only IP protocol it requires. If your web servier is on the local LAN - then simple LAN UNC-based (share path) file I/O is used. If the web server is located off premises or is supplied by your Internet Service Provider - we use FTP...

FTP is the most common means used by ISP's to allow for files to be modified on your web server.
If you are concerned about FTP, consider the following tips:

Since all modification requests come from JUST the single computer running WebReady, you can obtain a fixed IP and make sure your web server only allows FTP requests to originate from that machine.

All files that you want WebReady to be in charge of modifying can all live in one or more specific folders on your web server which are subdirectories from the rest of your web site. If WebReady can only modify files that are located in one or more files (you can restrict FTP access on most web servers on a per folder basis), then it becomes impossible for anyone to change anything other than the directories that WebReady is in charge of.

Because the WebReady computer can be behind a firewall at your station, it would be very hard for a hacker to change your web site.   Since most stations already use FTP based mechanisms to update their sites, WebReady will increase your security because it removes the actual login process from your staff.

You can discontinue the systems they use which may give them a lot more access to your web site than they need.
