USING THIS MANUAL...

This manual is intended to be used as both a Teaching Guide and a

Reference Manual.

This CARTREADY PRODUCTION manual has a complete Table of Contents,

and is broken down into an INTRODUCTION, OVERVIEW, STEP BY STEP, &

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER section.

Users with very little or no computer experience will probably find

it useful to read this manual from cover to cover while in front of

their PC. However, more experienced users can save time by first

reading the INTRODUCTION and OVERVIEW sections, then referencing the

STEP BY STEP & PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER sections as needed.

- INTRODUCTION (THIS SECTION), is an overview of the manual, and

also explains the usage of Hot-Keys.

- OVERVIEW is an overview of CartReady Production.

- STEP BY STEP Brings you through each possible activity in

PRODUCTION - keystroke by keystroke. The STEP BY

STEP sections include many screen drawings so you

know that you are exactly where you should be as you

go through the steps.

- PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER includes complete keystroke by keystroke

examples of procedures.

INTRODUCTION

PRESS FEWER KEYS...

HOT-KEYS SAVE KEYSTROKES.

There are two types of Hot-keys:

1) A combination of 2 keys (one of which is the ALT key) pressed

at one time which bypasses menus.

For example, while in the Cart Deck Production Screen, simply

press Alt-L to get to Library Maintenance. The other option is

to press F10, Arrow down and press ENTER. By using the

hot-key you press fewer keys.

To execute this hot-key, simply press the "L" key while holding

down the "Alt" key.

2) One key pressed which bypasses highlighting an option and

pressing ENTER within a menu.

For example, while in the load cart menu, simply press "L" to

load a cart from the Library. See picture below. The other

option is to press arrow down times and press ENTER. By

using the hot-key only 1 keystroke was used rather than 4.

The purpose of a hot-key is to save keystrokes. All options that

can be accessed using hot-keys will have the hot-key listed on the

selection menu.

PRODUCTION

OVERVIEW: PRODUCTION

PRODUCTION OVERVIEW

PRODUCTION encompasses ALL of the steps that go into Creating Carts,

Maintaining a Library of your Carts, Editing Carts,

Exporting and Importing Carts, & Managing Rotations.

CREATING CARTS

Obviously you need to get audio onto your computer's hard drive for

playback. This is done by creating carts.

Creating Carts involves: 1) LOADING a blank cart.

2) RECORDING audio onto the cart.

) SAVING the new cart to your Cart

Library.

MAINTAINING LIBRARY

ALL of the carts which you save will be stored in your Cart Library.

Library Maintenance includes COPYING carts, DELETING carts, as well

as MODIFYING the Cart's Description, and Start and Stop dates.

DELETING carts from your Library is an important part of Library

Maintenance, as you want to make prudent use of your disk storage

space.

EDITING CARTS

As you know, often when you record a cart, the cart needs to be

edited to remove unwanted audio. The CartReady Editors allows you

to TRIM a cart (remove audio from Beginning and End of a cart), and

to CUT a cart (remove audio from within a cart), with a sensitivity

as acute as .01 of a second.

EXPORTING AND IMPORTING CARTS

EXPORTING and IMPORTING is used to move carts from one CartReady

computer to another, and from CartReady to and from a third party

editing system. When you EXPORT a cart, a copy of the cart is put

PRODUCTION

OVERVIEW: PRODUCTION

PRODUCTION OVERVIEW

in the DOS directory which YOU specify. Then the cart can be

IMPORTED (copied once again) into CartReady on a different computer

(which can "see" the drive that the cart was EXPORTED to), or

IMPORTED into a third party editing system.

If CartReady is on more than one computer at your site, EXPORT and

IMPORT may be useful features for you.

Here are a few scenarios in which EXPORTING and IMPORTING would be

useful:

Scenario #1: CartReady is running on a LAN (Local Area Network)

with a non-dedicated server (it runs applications as

well as being a server), and the workstation(s) have

local hard drives. Now, Since the server in

non-dedicated there is a higher likelihood that it will

not run flawlessly. This being the case, if the server

goes down - CartReady cannot play carts over the air.

This is because ALL of the carts are on the

non-dedicated server, and only on the non-dedicated

server.

Solution: Well you could buy another PC and make it a dedicated

server, which costs money, or you could EXPORT and IMPORT

carts.

In this scenario you would EXPORT the carts from the

Production Computer (which is also the ONLY server) to a

directory on its hard drive (which can be accessed by the

workstations). Then, from the workstation(s), you would

IMPORT the cart into the workstation's individual

CartReady Cart Library on its own hard drive. Now - even

if the non-dedicated server goes down, CartReady is still

able to play carts.

If you have only two CartReady computers on your LAN, or

if ALL of the CartReady computers will ALL need the exact

same carts in each of their own libraries, you need only

use one EXPORT/IMPORT directory (path). However, if this

is not the case, it is a good strategy to have separate

EXPORT/IMPORT directories (paths) for each of the

CartReady computers that will be IMPORTING carts. This

way it is clear which EXPORTED carts are intended to be

IMPORTED to each of the CartReady computers.

PRODUCTION

OVERVIEW: PRODUCTION

PRODUCTION OVERVIEW

Scenario #2: CartReady is running on a LAN (Local Area Network), and

you are using the CARD-D audio card. The situation

here is the network cannot move the large

amounts of data throughput needed for a workstation to

flawlessly play a cart that is stored on the network's

hard drive. The result is possible "skipping" of the

carts while being recorded/played*. THIS IS NOT A HARD

AND FAST RULE. PLEASE CALL US TO DISCUSS OTHER

OPTIONS.

Solution: You would EXPORT the carts to a directory on the server's

hard drive which is accessible from the workstations.

Then, from the workstation(s), you would IMPORT the cart

into the workstation's individual CartReady Cart Library

on its own hard drive. Now - the carts are being

accessed from the local hard drive and we do not have to

be concerned with the limited network throughput causing

"skipping".

Scenario #: You want to use a third-party Window .Wav editing

system to Edit CartReady carts.

Solution: You would EXPORT the carts from CartReady to a DOS

directory. You would then IMPORT the cart into the

editor, edit the cart, and Export it from the third-party

editor back to DOS. The last step would be to IMPORT the

edited cart into CartReady.

* - Mono newsrooms, or stations with very fast and reliable servers

CAN run all the audio off of a file server. When a dedicated

file server is used, multiple workstations in different studios

CAN access ANY recording WITHOUT having to EXPORT and IMPORT to

and from computers. This is desirable if dozens of new cuts

are created each day.

PRODUCTION OVERVIEW

ROTATIONS

ROTATIONS are "lists" of carts (commercials, liners, PSA's, etc.),

which you set up so that the carts play in sequential order.

ROTATIONS can be played from the Cart Deck Production Screen, the

Live Assist screen, and within an Automation Program.

The first time the ROTATION is played, the first cart in the

ROTATION plays, the second time it is played the second cart in the

ROTATION plays, and so on. When the last cart in the ROTATION is

played, the pointer moves back to the first cart, and that cart is

played the next time the ROTATION is played. The pointer will move

down 1 cart whether you play the ROTATION from the Cart Deck

Production Screen, the Live Assist Screen, or from within an

Automation Program.

A ROTATION is useful in a number of situations, among them

are:

1) You have a sponsor who is currently running more than 1

commercial, and you want to keep the commercials fresh.

You can put all of the recorded carts with the sponsor's

commercials into a ROTATION and instead of loading one of the

carts when it is time to play a spot for this sponsor, you

load a ROTATION. When you use ROTATIONS you know that all of

the carts will get equal air time.

2) Just as you want to keep the commercials fresh , you

want to keep your Magic Jock Calls fresh and accurate. So

after you have the carts for these liners recorded, you would

put them into a ROTATION. When you use the ROTATION you

know that all of the liners will get equal air time, and that

the proper liner for that jock will play.

You should run REBUILD LIBRARY when there is a problem with the Library Index Data files. You will know there is

a problem with these files if you are able to LOAD A CART BY BROWSING THE LIBRARY, but get an error when

you try to LOAD A CART BY NAME/CODE.

Rebuilding the Library might create some RESURRECTED CARTS. A RESURRECTED CART is a cart that was found

in the CartReady audio directory but that CartReady did not know existed. You may or may not want to keep these carts,

but they will all be put in the library and you can PLAY them and determine if they are worth saving.

To run REBUILD LIBRARY:

RUNNING THIS WILL NOT ERASE ANY OF YOUR CARTS.

IF YOU ARE ON A LAN SYSTEM - MAKE SURE ALL OF THE COMPUTERS RUNNING WIREREADY OR
