FOR SUBSCRIBERS CONVERTING FROM A PRINTER: Your service feeds the printer from an EQ5100 satellite receiver or similar device, or a lease-line modem. AP can provide (generally at no cost) an in-line device called an APPI modem. This device is required by the AP and acts as a "filter" only passing the news feeds you pay for. If you don't get the APPI modem, you may damage the computer, and/or AP equipment. While it is technically possible to direct connect without the APPI modem, you will then see news you don't pay for which the AP does not allow. Therefore, make sure you connect the APPI modem (or DR400/9600) to the computer, not the raw feed cable. FOR SUBSCRIBERS CONVERTING FROM AP NEWSDESK: Your wire service feeds your computer directly from an EQ5100 satellite receiver or similar device, or a lease-line modem. AP Newsdesk lets AP control what news you see just like the cable service controls pay-per-view channels via downloads. Unlike Newsdesk, unfortunately, WireReady does NOT give AP the power to remote control your computer, and/or shut you down for non-payment etc. Therefore, AP will provide (generally at no cost if you are returning the AP Newsdesk software) a device called an APPI modem. This device is required by the AP and acts as a "filter" only passing the news feeds you pay for. It lets AP remotely download you so they still retain the power to decide which news you have access to. While it is technically possible to leave the computer connected directly to the cable that used to feed the Newsdesk software, doing so will result in thousands of stories on the computer you don't want. For an average one person newsroom, this results in a mess of information that means you have to work extra to sort it out. So Don't! Get an APPI from the AP. While WireReady lets you filter with the ALT-I key, you'd be creating a lot more work than necessary, and violating AP requirements as well. Therefore, make sure you get and connect the APPI modem (or DR400/9600) to the computer, NOT the raw feed cable. AP will generally connect the APPI to your computer, or give you permission to do it yourself. Following the procedures above ensures you will only be tailoring WireReady to managing the hundreds of stories you used to get, not thousands of feeds which will result if you don't follow these procedures.
