The wire service you have ordered software for has not provided us direct information on connecting to the computer. The wire service you have should be currently feeding a serial printer. If this is the case, simply disconnect the cable from the printer, change the gender and connect it to the COM port on your computer. If the printer is parallel, you may need an inexpensive converter. (Parallel printers use edge connectors, and serial printers use 25 pin connectors if you aren't sure) In any case, call us or the wire service if you need information on how to physically connect the wire service cable to the computer. The wire service configured in your WireReady software system will appear in the WIRE BROWSER as follows: HEADLINE CATEGORY PRIORITY TIME DATE FEED#7 GENERIC GENERIC 12:05 5/1/96 FEED#6 GENERIC GENERIC 12:00 5/1/96 FEED#5 GENERIC GENERIC 11:44 5/1/96 FEED#4 GENERIC GENERIC 11:35 5/1/96 Each new feed is placed at the top of the screen with a FEED #. For more effective viewing, use the QUICK PEEK FEATURE: 1) In the WIRE BROWSER, press the INS key several times to split the screen so as you scroll the stories, you can read the several first lines of each feed to identify it. Pressing the DEL key shrinks the view. Use the INS and DEL key to pick the split that suits you. 2) Hit F10 and choose QUICK PEEK OPTIONS. These options make the view more usable. SKIP HEADER is not necessary since there isn't one. Display codes doesn't matter because there aren't any. However COMPRESS will eliminate spaces in the quick peak so more of the story fits into the quick peek. This lets you preview stories before deciding on whether you want to view them (<ΔΩ) or print them (F5). The reason that the Headline, Category, and Priority information seems limited, is there is no header coding information that the computer can lock onto to give you this information. We are either unaware of the codes, or they don't exist. We can take advantage of anything. Once you are capturing, if you see anything at the beginning of each feed that we can "scoop" to give you better summary information, let us know and we will provide a free upgrade to take advantage of them. If it is possible, we will contact this wire service to develop a standard header which includes headline, and/or category and priority information at the beginning of each feed. This will allow WireReady to display useful summary information such as a headline category and priority for each feed. When the wire service adopts these standards, we will issue a free upgrade which will take advantage of this change.
